LUMEN
Smart lighting
Team: Hsuan Lee (Individual)
Brief: Within the context of overcrowding, extensively investigate the chosen homelessness group. After identifying the critical needs of the users, create a design solution that improves the living conditions of these homeless individuals.
Solution: Lumen is a smart lighting system designed to reduce fatigue for those who are sleeping in overcrowded living situations. Through a combination of sound and light, Lumen manipulates the circadian rhythms of its users, lulling them to sleep and waking them up at crucial times to enforce healthy sleep habits.

Inspired from nature
Lumen may be set to wake particular users in overcrowded situations by projecting artificial light into specified regions of the room, leaving others to sleep. This procedure is similar to when the sun rises and illuminates the pupils, signalling the start of the waking process.
Calm and soothing
Lumen includes six slanted speakers which can individually project white noise and other relaxing noises such as rain, waves and nature to help promote sleep for its users.
Smart and adaptable
Lumen analyses when its users sleep and adapts to their diverse lives, giving this data to social providers so that they may better support them. It was designed to be used in boarding homes, public housing, and other overcrowded settings.
